Course General Description

Sculpture and Combined Media is a vibrant, fresh, professional and experimental programme that equips you with a strong skill-set in the broader field of cultural production. Alongside traditional sculpture processes you will become proficient in new media such as performance art, public art, video, Internet based media, installation, sound art and photography. Class hours are 23 hours per week. We stress the importance of professional practice in presentation, proposal writing and documentation as these essentials allow you to sustain a studio based art practice and find opportunity in a variety of sculptural, educational, curatorial, public and performative contexts. Our graduates engage with public art, commissions, exhibition and cultural event planning, professional promotion and education workshops. We offer the opportunity to work on large-scale public art commissions with bodies such as the Limerick Civic Trust and the Emergency Services. We are one of the few courses in Ireland to run professional public art commissions and also participate in large-scale cultural productions such as collaboration with Fuerza Bruta, the Argentinian physical theatre event for City of Culture (2014). Exclusively on offer to Sculpture & Combined Media students are a series of Public Art Commissions. The staff assist students in the preparation of professional models and presentation material in relation to the artist brief. This mirrors conditions and criteria used in the ‘real’ world of % for art public art commissioning, and is an invaluable learning outcome for our students.
