The Amur State University named after Sholem Aleichem was founded in 1989 as a pedagogical institute. In 2005, due to the growing needs of the Jewish Autonomous Region for highly qualified personnel in the fields of economics, management, social sphere, technical and engineering personnel, Birobidzhan State Institute was transformed into the Far Eastern State Social and Humanitarian Academy.
