Course General Description

The aim of the Printmaking course is to expose learners to the history and application of contemporary and traditional print techniques. The course is centred on a critical knowledge of Printmaking today as well as building practical skills that will equip students with the necessary proficiency in the field in order to operate as artists within a contemporary visual art context, both in South Africa and in the global sphere. Students will have access to specialist studio facilities where they will be able to explore all the aspects of contemporary print practice, as well as some rare historical techniques. Students receive in-depth practical training in a range of traditional processes including etching, silkscreen, stone lithography, collagraph, relief printing, monotype and monoprint. Printmaking offers countless opportunities for image making and students are encouraged to experiment and explore innovative ways to achieve unique hybrid prints, enabling them to develop their own personal vocabulary.
