About the video

The project was to design an outbuilding, a folly, that is deferential to the existing structures on the property. A simple, but flexible space is required, adapting to a variety of needs from guest quarters, to play space, to gathering, and study. A scaled down barn seemed the perfect starting point, and the schemes developed show how we take the traditional notions of the barn typology and morph them into more contemporary readings.
I discuss the four plan options and two variants that were developed, describing how I arrived at each of the solutions. The video ends with a look at the SketchUp model I’ve created alongside the plans to begin studying the three-dimensional ramifications of the plan decisions. I use this to refine the design with my client as we move forward.

Meet the instructors

Eric Reinholdt is a founder of Thirty by Forty Design Workshop which was established in June 2013 in a home he designed overlooking Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. In 2016, he designed and constructed the Long Studio to complement the Longhouse and serve as a full-scale model of his design principles and the latest in building science; this is the home for 30X40.
“My work celebrates humble materials, subtle contrasts and finely-crafted details. I have a strong interest in modern regionalist design, local materials and familiar building forms juxtaposed against modern, open floor plans. I employ a minimalist, Shaker-like palette of details inspired by the site and natural surroundings.”
