30X40 Design Workshop
Architectural Model Making - Tools - An Architect's Guide (part 3) An inside look and an 'unboxing' of my studio tool chest, a compendium of tips and tricks for getting the most out of your toolset, and my six essential tools. Although there are numerous specialty tools used in model making, the reality is, you need very few technical implements to get started so rather than investing in an expensive list of gear and gadgets.

About the video
Once you begin making models you can supplement with the upgraded items I point out along the way. In order of relative importance, I think you should spend a little on tools, slightly more on materials and invest heavily – mostly your time – into developing your model building skillset and making things.
I discuss among other things: measuring, cutting, adhesives, poking, sculpting, prodding, soldering, clamping, gluing, tweezing (is that word?), scaling, sanding, shaping and many other tool related topics.

Eric Reinholdt is a founder of Thirty by Forty Design Workshop which was established in June 2013 in a home he designed overlooking Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. In 2016, he designed and constructed the Long Studio to complement the Longhouse and serve as a full-scale model of his design principles and the latest in building science; this is the home for 30X40.
“My work celebrates humble materials, subtle contrasts and finely-crafted details. I have a strong interest in modern regionalist design, local materials and familiar building forms juxtaposed against modern, open floor plans. I employ a minimalist, Shaker-like palette of details inspired by the site and natural surroundings.”
